Jim's Daily Journal: June 29, 2006

Before I describe the day, let me explain something about our transponder.  It is working and downloading info every hour.  This means that you are not seeing all of the curves etc that we make.  You just see what is sent from where the transponder is located on the hour.  I will ask SageTracker on Thursday morning if we can have more frequent downloads to give a better idea of where we are.

Secondly, you will see the route we use at night to transport our atv’s to the motels we are staying at.  This means you will see a fairly straight line from a point where we quit and then to the motel.  Then you will see it back to that stopping point for our starting point the next day.  The point being, we are riding the atv’s from the point we left off the day before so we are trying to cover the entire trip on the atv.

Now having said that, we left highway 20 just west of Riley, Oregon  this morning at 10:00 and went through Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property.  It started raining while we were unloading and continued for the next six hours.  We were on BLM roads which were very rough and loaded with rocks.  We could only average about 5 mph for the first 15 miles.  After that we started hitting nice forest roads.  The roads were dirt or gravel and fairly smooth.  By 1:00 we were in some great forests with elevations around 5,000 feet.  However, it rained and rained and you could not hardly see the road let alone any of the views.

There are no shelters in this wilderness to take cover, so about 2:00 we finally found the largest cluster of dense pine trees and parked under them to rest and eat.  The rained let up for a few minutes so we could change into some dryer clothes, put our rain gear back on and head out.  We arrived at Seneca, Oregon about 6:00.  After loading we drove to John Day, Oregon, hung up a mess or wet clothing, showered, ate some meat load and came back to the room to upload our route data for Fridays journey.  We traveled about 105 miles on Thursday.

It’s 11:30 now and can’t keep my eyes open to type anything else since we woke up this morning at 6:00.  It takes awhile to get started in the morning due to eating, gassing the machines, picking up odds and ends we forgot and then driving 45 minutes to our take off point.  WHEW!  We will upload photos from the first 7 days when we get to Superior, Montana and have a day off to catch our breath.  Oh, Rod our dedicated transport driver managed to get in three naps today. I can’t stand it!!!
