Day 8

We left Pierce, Idaho at 9:45 heading for the Superior, Montana area.  At the last minute we got some local advice from a deputy and another gentlemen that has lived in the area for a long time.  Instead of following FR 250 which is asphalt for about 10 miles, we went north out of Pierce for a few blocks to the ranger station and then turned east on a gravel road called Shanghi Rd.  This took us about 15 miles east on gravel and it eventually hooked up with FR 250.

We met some great people today.  The one photo is Deputy Steve who sent us off in the right direction for the day.  Next one is a great couple who gave us some cookies and shared their ketchup with us.  I thought I was actually going to have to eat a sandwich without ketchup.  Their names are Glen and Elizabeth from Superior, Montana and Elizabeth says she moved out here a long time ago and met Glen, the “Love of her Life”.
We also met Andy from Missoula, Montana.  He is the one in photo that is fly fishing.  I think we stopped about 10 times and dropped off stickers to numerous folks that were camping with atv’s.

FR 250 is a great slightly winding gravel road that runs along the Clearwater River and gets more and more scenic as you head towards Montana.  We met a lot of folks along the way that were camping, fly fishing and atving.  Beyond a doubt, the vast majority of folks on that long stretch were there with atvs.  Re affirms what most atver’s already know, that one of the major uses in the forest is by people who want to enjoy the sport in a responsible way.

We have been picking up trash as we go along the way and this section between Pierce and Superior had only two or three discarded beer and pop cans.  I talked with one gentleman who said local clubs and others patrol the area fairly well and it was evident.

We arrived at Superior and went through a tunnel under the Interstate and then headed south on Mullan Road which runs parallel with Interstate 90.  We followed that for about 15 miles south to exit 61 and found Rod exactly where he was supposed to be. It was 5:30 and after we woke him up, we loaded the machines and headed for Missoula to spend the next two days regrouping, visiting the Arctic Cat dealership and waiting for our buddy Larry to arrive on Thursday so we can start out again.  Rod took Aaron and AJ to the airport for a 7:30 flight.  It was great having them with as the first three days in eastern Oregon were very desolate.  On each of those three days, once we were out of the small starting communities, we did not see ANYONE or any buildings, barns, houses etc.  I mean nothing.

So tomorrow, Wednesday, we are going to catch up on photos, get all of them downloaded and get some titles on a few so they make more sense.  Hopefully it will be a bit cooler as the temps have been in the high 90’s each day and really drains you when you’re  on a machine for 6 to 8 hours.  That’s it for the day and looking forward to trailering back to our starting point and heading for Seeley Lake, Montana.  Remember, when your looking at our transponder tracks, you will see some movement down a road and then back the next day.  That’s just because the transponder is tracking us to the motel for the night and then back to starting point again.  Thanks again to SageTracker for the great job of working with us, Lowrance for making the trip very easy with their GPS systems and Arctic Cat for having faith in us from the beginning.  AND ABOVE ALL THANKS TO THE GUYS BACK AT TRIPLE E DEALERSHIP IN ORION, IL FOR KEEPING UP WITH THE FORUM AND TO TYLER FOR GETTING ALL OF THESE UPDATES AND PHOTOS IN OUR SITE!
