Day 10

July 6th  which is 10th day going from Frenchtown, Montana to Seeley Lake, Montana

We picked up Larry at the Missoula airport at 10:30, gave him a couple of pretzels and put him on a machine around 11:30.  We left on a frontage road about 10 miles north of Frenchtown and followed it along the interstate until we came to Mill Rd which heads off towards Seeley Lake.

This is hard to believe for anyone that does not live in Montana, but you can actually ride your atv on the interstate out here.  THAT’S RIGHT!!!  What a state.  We decided in the spirit of proper and safe atving that we would not do that-----but it was very tempting to spend a few miles getting some photos of us riding down I-90.  But then I took a look at the Kenworths going by at 80mph and thought again.  I think I would come out second best with a confrontation against something weighing 40,000lbs.

So we zipped up Mill Road which winds around some small streams and up into the mountains.  The trip ended up taking only about 3 hours and we traveled 60 miles. It did take us through a reservation.  There was a sign at the entrance to the reservation saying you needed a tribal permit, but just as we got to the sign, we met a couple of Native Americans and they told us it was ok to go through if we stayed on the road and didn’t use any camping facilities.

The road was gravel most of the way and we did hit a few high peaks that overlooked Upper and Lower Jocko Lake.  Very beautiful with dense woods along all sides.  I felt bad that we broke Larry in with only 60 miles, but since he had to get up at 4:30 CST to catch a flight I thought we should give him a break.  Most often his garage door doesn’t break suction until 9:00 in the morning so didn’t want to wear him out.  The interesting Larry pointed out was that we average about 9 miles more per hour than I have the last few days.  He feels some of the past riders were apparently slowing me down.

As usual, Rod was at our destination point and miracle or miracles, he wasn’t taking a nap.  There were just too many good restaurants (and bars) within walking distance of the motel.  He felt it necessary to scout all of them to find the best place to eat supper.  What a guy!  A side note to my daughter Cammy and Son, Larry wants you to know he protected me the entire day from any bears and mountain lions.

About an hour after we arrived everyone took a nap during a great thunderstorm.  Hopefully that will keep the dust down for the ride tomorrow.  I think we may have about 150 miles tomorrow.  That’s all I can think.  Didn’t have to use my Warn Winch once today, but did have to pull a nail out of a rear tire and use a plug.  Once again the Arctic Cat ran great and the Lowrance GPS kept us on a steady course.  I don’t know how Lewis and Clark did it-----I really don’t.
