Day 14

Today we got a late start as we had to spend some time in Lewistown, Montana.  Larry was using Aaron’s atv and had to actually buy new tires for the front of the machine.   As long as he was getting tires, he had the oil and filter changed.  It came to about $298.00 and needless to say he was upset.  Not about the price, as the dealer was very good and helped us immediately after coming in.  If you ever need your atv or snowmobile worked on in Lewistown, Montana stop at Central Montana Arctic Cat.  The new owners Dan and Trudi Killham are great and they have a great shop.

Anyhow, back to my story.  You would think if a guy was going to loan his atv to a very good friend, he would at least make sure the tires were in good shape.  After we spent too much time goofing around in town and eating at the Poor Mans restaurant, we headed north again with the trailer to drop us off where we ended the day before.

We left Winifred about 2:40 and on advice from numerous folks, decided to just get to a great little town north of the Missouri River called Zortman.  This is an old mining town and has a general store, some cabins and motel and a bar/diner.  We stayed at the Zortman Motel & Garage with some great folks.  Candy, John and there kids Bethany, Mary Grace and Hannah and a cat named Timothy made us feel at home.  The bar has a great restaurant and we met Shelley, Lloyd the accountant, Theresa and Jasmin the cook.

We would have never found this little spots in Montana without the help of the firefighters we met at the James Kipp Campground.  Jessica, Kristopher and Rob told us the back roads to get to Zortman.  We actually went on a forest road numbered 303 and it was two ruts, sage brush and cactus for about 20 miles.  Thanks a lot guys!

After a few drinks and a history lesson on Zortman, we did just what a guy needs to do after spending 6 hours on an atv.  We climbed on them again and drove 6 miles down a desolate road to a cabin in the woods that is left open at all times for folks to see. It was originally the owner of a local mine that used it for his summer house.

So now it’s 11:30 at night and we are sitting in the middle of nowhere typing this.  I’ve decided riding the atv is the easy part of the trip and spending time at night downloading photos and jotting down what happened for the day is the hard part.  I’m going to bed.  Tomorrow we have a real long haul trying to get as close as possible to the town of Glasgow or Fort Peck.  See ya!
