Day 23

July 19th Day 23, Cass Lake to Moose Lake, Minnesota

We started the day at 9:30 from the parking lot of Stony Point resort in Cass Lake.  The Soo Line Trail is right across highway 2.  Before we left, I took Rod and Dan to the old ranger station in Cass Lake.  If you’re in town, it’s worth going to look at, as it’s a step back in time.

The trail from our starting point to Moose Lake is all old railroad grade with the exception of a few miles here and there.  In those places you have to get off the grade and go on a trail for a bit, but 90% of the trails are very smooth.  There is a lot of marsh area and your chances of seeing wildlife is pretty good.  Larry Tribby from just outside of Duluth joined us for the ride and traveled the entire day to Moose Lake.

When we got to Remer, Minnesota, we were joined by Bill and his father in law Ralph.  They road with us from Remer to Moose Lake, spent the night and then road back to their trailer in Remer.  Both are from Minneapolis area and we appreciated their effort to join us.  Before we left Remer we had to stop in the Woodsman Restaurant.  Phyllis is 81 and has been making pies for the last 40 years.  She actually has a recipe from her great grandmother and it’s worth the stop.  Remember to say please and thank you if Corky waits on you.  She is pretty strict about manners!!!!  (I thought she was going to make me stand in the corner a few times).

We went by Federal Dam on Leech Lake, but didn’t have time to stop.  There is a general store, two bars and gas station there if you need a break, gas or snack.  The only Muskie I’ve ever caught in my life was when I was 12 years old and it was with my dad and Uncle Carl.  We were fishing from one of the old launch boats out of Federal Dam and it was quite a thrill for a kid.

The rest of the day was uneventful.  The Soo Line is a good, fairly smooth trail and not as boring as one would think for going mostly in a straight line.  It’s an easy ride to start at Moose Lake or Cass Lake, spend the night and return the next day.  I’m glad to be more than half way through my trip, but somewhat sad to be leaving Minnesota.  I had hoped we would go through Lake Wobegon, but I could not find it on the map.  I would be very disappointed if there were no such place.  What could be better than a town where “The women are strong, the men are good looking and the children are above average”  See ya tomorrow!
