Day 25

July 21st Day 25 Friday Cable to Hurley

Four of us left Cable, Wisconsin at 9:15 and started our trip to Hurley, Wisconsin.  It was in the 80’s by the end of the day so that was a welcome relief from the high 90’s we had experienced earlier.

We took a road that was newly opened due to our trip and followed that around the south edge of the Lake.  We then picked up forest rd 203 for a few miles and then hooked up with trail 8 heading east.  Eventually we ended up crossing highway M and traveled trails and good county roads to north of Clam Lake.  There are four corners in Clam Lake and all have restaurants, bars or gas and motel.  It’s a convenient area and at the cross roads of numerous snowmobile and now atv trails.

We ate at the Elkhorn, Inn and then headed northeast again.  After spending a few miles on trails, we were able to get on gravel county roads than winded through the countryside.  We stopped and thanked Ken Bay who is the chairman of his township in Ashland County.  All county roads are pretty much open in that area along with forest roads so the riding is great.

We then hit some terrible trails coming into Hurley.  They usually have a bit of water in them which kind of hides the rocks I guess.  At any rate, it was once again very dusty and the trails were full of ruts and good size rocks.  Fortunately, this lasted for just 5 or 6 miles and then trails became decent again.  The side trail to Joanie’s Side Kick Bar and Restaurant was closed and re-routed through a different part of Iron Belt.  No doubt everyone will still figure out how to get there.  If you have visited it once, you will definitely go back again.

We then got to the Hurley Inn Motel where Don had his truck and trailer parked.  We followed him to Eagle River to be part of a large atv parade in the morning.  The parade was in conjunction to a endurance race being held at the famous Eagle River snowmobile race track.  The parade was great with all the typical stuff needed.  A fire truck, band on a flat bed, a few political officials and a zillion atvs.  We were honored to have a place at the front, (right behind the fire truck).  It was great to meet more people that gave us words of encouragement.

So tomorrow on our day off, we are going to be in a parade!!!!! Ya Hoo.!
