Day 40

August 5th Saturday Day 40 Maine border to Jackman and Beyond

Rod and I crossed the border into Maine just north of Jackman.  We received permission the night before to drive my Arctic Cat through, although we had to start just before the border and load it on a trailer once we were a hundred yards into Maine.

At the present time, there are snowmobile trails crossing the border, but those trails are not multi-use as there are swamps and marsh areas involved.  The Border Riders Sportsman Club says this will be resolved by next year and they are working with Quebec to connect the two areas.

We crossed at 10:00 and were at the Sportsman Club within a few minutes.  I can’t thank Bill Lombard of the Moose Alley ATV Club for the effort he put forth in getting riders at this point of the trip.  I could tell the minute I started meeting the people from these two clubs that they were dedicated ATV people.  We rode for about three to four hours on Saturday and did a big loop and return trip after visiting Jackman.  While we ate at Bishops General Store, the wonderful people at Jackmans Power Sports changed my oil, filter and gear case fluids and they did it free.  Thanks to this group.  They got me right in and my machine was ready to go when we finished eating.

This is an interesting dealership as the store what appears to be a few hundred snowmobiles for people that come to the area in the winter time.  He has racks of machines stored and when visitors arrive, they are sent off with their snowmobile to enjoy the winter and they have not had to trailer them to the area.

We met numerous dedicated atvers this day and on the return trip to the Sportsman Club, Rod found out you don’t want to go slow through a mud hole if Michelle is riding behind you.  Apparently someone suggested that she get just a touch of mud on Rod by flying by him in a water hole.  I’m not sure who told her to do it, but she took the job to heart.

We ended the day back at the club and then trailered to Ken and Faith Snowdens home in Greenville.  This area is right on beautiful Moose Head Lake and it is definitely a place you could spend a few days visiting.  Ken and Faith put us up in their cabin on the river leading into the lake and it was great.  They treated us like part of the family.  Before going to bed, a group of us went to Kelly’s Restaurant that sits right on the lake.  Of course we had to have sea food as that is what Maine is all about.  The atmosphere was quaint, the food was great and all of the well dressed customers gave us plenty of space when we marched in with mud and dust flying around us.  You know how it is, people with white sport coats just don’t understand the concept of getting muddy and dusty and having your shoes smell like swamp gas after a day of riding.  What a boring life they must live at the club!

See Ya Tomorrow.
